Massachusetts has over 1,800 public schools in more than 300 school districts, serving about 915,000 students statewide. The state is widely recognized for having one of the highest-performing education systems in the country. Attendance rates are typically around 94%, and the graduation rate is close to 90%, both above the national average.

While Massachusetts does not have full statewide open enrollment, it does allow limited inter-district school choice in participating districts. The state has more than 70 charter schools and hundreds of magnet and specialized programs for families to consider. In addition, there are over 850 private schools across Massachusetts.

Massachusetts offers several alternative education options as well. Families can choose charter schools, online learning programs, or homeschooling. If they decide to homeschool, parents must submit a plan for approval to their local school district. The state also runs the METCO program, which allows students from Boston to attend public schools in suburban districts.
