Concerns have recently developed about the content of books and other resources made available to students through their school library. The district school board is responsible for addressing these concerns by implementing standards for school library materials to ensure no obscene content is available to students. This model policy outlines those standards as recommended by educators and professionals with library experience. These recommendations can be found in the NWEF training series ‘Oversight of Sexual Content in Curriculum and School Libraries.’
There are several states and districts that participate is a program called the Library Link Program. This program uses community support to open wider access to resources made available to students and where those materials are accessible by allowing students to use their student ID card as a public library card. In some districts, books can even be ordered from the public library to the public-school library to be borrowed. While this program opens access to learning materials it also puts students at a higher risk of accidentally obtaining obscene materials. This policy seeks to establish more guidelines for how the Library Link Program is implemented to safeguard students from accessing obscene materials.
